PGL Astana 2026 begins today, 9 May, kicking off a nine-day stretch at Barys Arena in Kazakhstan that’s stacked with storylines. Sixteen teams, a $1.6 million prize pool, six top-10 VRS sides in the field, and two of the biggest roster debuts of the season landing on the same opening day.
The opening eight fixtures
Round 1 features Aurora vs Heroic, G2 vs Fisher College, MOUZ vs Gentle Mates, The MongolZ vs magic, Spirit vs The Huns Esports, Falcons vs K27, PARIVISION vs 9z, and FURIA vs Monte. The Swiss group stage runs five Bo3 rounds before the top eight reach single-elimination playoffs at the arena.
Falcons begin the karrigan era
Finn ‘karrigan’ Andersen plays his first official Team Falcons match against K27. The reunion with NiKo and coach zonic — the leadership core that defined their FaZe years — is the biggest individual storyline of the event. Falcons benched kyxsan to make room, and the new lineup carries Kyousuke (1.31 rating), m0NESY (1.28), and NiKo (1.22) — a top-three fragging trio matched only by Spirit in the field.
MOUZ debut a rebuilt lineup
MOUZ enter Astana with jL on loan and academy talent xelex promoted to the main roster, with Brollan moved out of the IGL chair. Coach sycrone framed the change candidly: ‘This decision is not fair to Brollan on a personal level. But leadership sometimes means accepting that fairness and necessity are not always the same thing.’ Their opener against Gentle Mates is the project’s first real Tier-1 audit.
What to watch
Spirit are heavy favourites against The Huns Esports — donk at 1.36 rating and sh1ro at 1.28 leading the highest-rated Tier-1 roster in the field. The tightest opening fixture is Aurora vs Heroic, with both books pricing it sub-1.50 for Aurora and a 4-4 head-to-head split. With Vitality absent from this event, every other top-tier team has a clear lane to a marquee result.
