magic pulled off the cinderella run of PGL Astana 2026. The CIS underdogs opened the Swiss stage 0-2 with losses to The MongolZ and Monte, then stitched together three straight wins over K27, HEROIC and Gentle Mates to qualify for playoffs at Barys Arena. The closer — a 2-0 sweep of Gentle Mates (13-5 Mirage, 16-13 OT Inferno) — locked in the bracket spot.
The home-crowd factor
The qualification means Kazakh player Abdurakhim ‘mo0N’ Issa plays on stage in front of home fans. ‘It means a lot for me. From 0-2 to 3-2 is amazing. I’m playing in my country, in the arena, and I have a lot of support,’ mo0N told HLTV. The emotional storyline has made magic one of the fan-favourite teams of the bracket.
MaSvAl’s tournament arrives
Svyatoslav ‘MaSvAl’ Masko delivered the series of his career against Gentle Mates — 44 kills, 100 ADR, 1.67 rating. sFade8 and AW backed him up across both maps. Mirage flowed early; Inferno was the tighter contest, dragged to overtime before magic closed it in dramatic fashion.
HEROIC out, magic in
The bigger casualty of magic’s run was HEROIC. The Danish side had looked promising in the early Swiss rounds and Chr1zN had described the team as one match away from clicking — but magic eliminated them in another upset before the Gentle Mates closeout. With $1.6M on the line and the bracket now set, magic carry the most unlikely qualification story of the event into the playoffs.
