Opening duel

The opening duel is the first kill of a round. Winning opening duels converts to roughly 70%+ round wins for the winning side, making it one of the single most predictive in-round metrics.

What is an opening duel in CS2?

When the first kill of a round happens, the surviving side goes from 5-vs-5 to 5-vs-4 — and historically wins about 70% of such rounds on T-side executes and closer to 75% on CT-side holds. That outsized effect is why opening-duel statistics are tracked at the player level: a player with a 55% opening duel win rate is meaningfully above average, and a 60%+ rate is elite. Entry fraggers are measured largely on opening duels, but AWPers and lurkers often contribute too, with different risk profiles. Betting markets pay attention to pre-match opening-duel metrics because they correlate strongly with both round and map winners.
